Hidden Gems: Winchester’s Chesil Street Murals

The more I explore Winchester, the more I uncover its hidden treasures. My latest discovery? The stunning murals at Chesil Street Car Park. Even if you don’t drive, this spot is well worth a visit.

These vibrant images capture Winchester’s iconic landmarks, as well as a beautifully rendered steam train. While the murals don’t have captions, I’m convinced this image pays tribute to the abandoned railway line that once passed through the now-defunct Chesil Railway Station.

This railway held significant historical importance, particularly during World War II. It served as a crucial link, transporting munitions and troops to South Coast ports in preparation for the Normandy landings. Although the station closed to passengers in the 1960s, it continued to handle goods for a few more years before fading into history.

If you’d like to delve deeper into Winchester’s fascinating past, keep an eye out for my upcoming St Giles Trails, which will be published this January.
